KANNAWIDAN FESTIVAL TAKE PLACE IN THE MIDST OF PANDEMIC

A noble idea occurred fifteen years ago in the minds of a group of civic-minded Ilocanos who wanted to promote cultural awareness and preserve Ilocos Norte's rich historical and cultural heritage. Ilocos Sur is a lovely province in Luzon's northern part. They wanted to instill pride in their heritage in the youth and future generations. It is a festival that takes place between the last week of January and the first week of February. The commemoration of the province's founding day is included in the schedule of events.

Residents of the province of Ilocos Sur have a simpler celebration of the annual Kannawidan Ylocos Festival this year. The provincial government, through its provincial tourism office, has announced strict guidelines to be observed during the festival to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The provincial government strictly mandates usage of face mask and SafePass to enter the Trade and Food Fair in Kannawidan grounds, barangay Tamag.
Governor Ryan Luis V. Singson also announced Thursday that children under 15 years and senior citizens are not permitted to enter the Fair. In an interview, he asked for the patience and support of the public amid these restrictions.

“Again, I encourage all of you to come and visit our Trade and Food Fair to support our local products. Kaya kung bibili kayo ng mga produkto dito, tandaan niyo na mayroon kayong matutulungang kababayan natin dito sa Ilocos Sur," Governor Singson said.

Kannawidan has been one of the province's most expected annual celebrations, boosting Ilocano culture. One way to look at community is as a social construction in which people build a sense of similarity based on their culture; therefore, the culture is the starting point of community (Cohen, 1985).
